History

In 1961, Wendell Cherry and David Jones, 2 lawyers from Kentucky, had began a nursing business at home.

They and their 4 friends invested 1000 dollars each to make Extendicare and Heritage House. The company owned seven nursing homes by the year of 1968. They then decided to widen their business and so they obtained the Medical Center Hospital in the state of Alabama.

Extendicare and Heritage House then became Humana Incorporated in 1974 and they concentrated more on the hospital operating business. In the early 80s, the company had become one of the major hospital companies in the whole world. They owned more than 80 hospitals allover the globe.

The company got bigger with the business in the health insurance in 1984, by offering affordable HMO plans.

Today, the company offers a variety of health plans that include the necessities of families, individuals, and businesses. Their headquarters is still in Louisville.
